Starting in the mid-1980s there came into existence at the University of Oregon a small group of researchers focused on the epidemiology of sports injuries. Initiated by Dr. Eric D. Zemper, then Director of UO’s International Institute for Sport and Human Performance, he soon attracted the attention of three students, whom he began to mentor and who later became colleagues. These individuals were Dennis Caine, Peter Harmer and Willy Pieter, who all earned their doctorates at UO and later became department chairs at various institutions around the world. All of these individuals continued doing research in the epidemiology of sports injuries throughout their careers (although before retiring in 2016, Zemper did eventually move back into the field of medical education where he had begun his professional career in 1971). For more than 30 years this group of colleagues, which eventually began calling themselves the “University of Oregon Sports Injury Epidemiology Group” even though they were scattered around the world, produced a large amount of research in this field. The following is a comprehensive list of the research produced by this group from 1984 through 2018, sorted by individual and by category of publication. Several items in this list appear more than once, in cases where more than one of the group was involved in producing a particular item. A number of items also are found elsewhere on this website, since some of the work was done under the auspices of Exercise Research Associates, which was owned and operated by Zemper from 1989 to 2001.
